How card statements differ
A bank statement usually prints a balance after every transaction or every day, so each row can be checked on its own. Most credit card statements don't. They list transactions with a single amount column, mark payments and refunds with CR, and print the previous balance and the new balance in a summary box at the top. Purchases increase what you owe; payments and refunds reduce it.
Tallyrows recognises this layout: when there's no balance column and the statement reads like a card statement (card ending, credit limit, minimum payment and similar wording), it treats plain amounts as spending and CR amounts as payments and refunds, and takes the previous and new balance from the summary.
How the check works without a balance column
With no running balance, rows can't be checked one by one. Instead Tallyrows checks the whole statement: previous balance, plus purchases, minus payments and refunds, must equal the new balance to the penny. The bar above the rows shows the previous balance, money in, money out and the new balance, and the verdict says whether the totals agree. If one amount was misread or a refund was taken as a purchase, the totals won't match, and you can fix the row before downloading.
What people use it for
Card statements are where business spending often hides: subscriptions, travel, supplier orders paid by card. Getting them into a spreadsheet lets you sort by merchant, total a month's spending by category, or pick out the business lines for an expense claim or a tax return. Getting them into accounting software as a credit card account lets you reconcile the card the same way as a bank account, against the new balance printed on each statement.
Convert a card statement
- Drop the PDF statement above.
- Check the verdict. "Totals check" means previous balance plus the transactions equals the new balance.
- Download the format you need.
What each format does with a card statement
- Excel and CSV: purchases appear under Money out, payments and refunds under Money in, with a signed Amount column (purchases negative). The balance column is empty because the statement doesn't print one. The Checks sheet in Excel records the previous and new balance and whether they agree.
- QBO and OFX: written as credit card statements rather than bank statements, with the card's visible digits as the account ID, so they can be imported into a credit card account. See importing into QuickBooks.
- QIF: written as
!Type:CCard.
Limitations
- Some card statements put foreign currency amounts, exchange rates or instalment plans on separate lines. If those lines carry figures in the amount column, check them against the paper statement.
- If a card statement does print a running balance, Tallyrows checks every row against it, as it does for a bank statement.
- Statements that are scans or photos go to the AI reader, and the same totals check runs on the result.
Your first statement is free (every format, up to 30 pages, no sign-up). After that a credit pack is 10 statements for £9 or 50 for £29, with no subscription.
